The Lord took Sue, our loving mother, wife, teacher and friend to Heaven on Tuesday, May 28, 2019.  She and husband, Bill were a few days shy of their 52nd wedding anniversary.  They met on a blind date at Roanoke College and the rest is history, good times, bad times and times in between.  The family includes two boys, Tom and Ben, two girls, Kim and Maggie Whitson, Three granddaughters, Cora, Lena and Avery, all living in Johnson City, TN and Charleston, SC.

Sue was born in Greensboro, NC on October 11, 1946.  Her parents were Dick and Janie Stephenson, a founding family of Davis and Stephenson Insurance in Roanoke, VA.  She will be remembered as a peaceful, supportive and giving person.  She aided and taught special education for Roanoke County Schools for over twenty years at Penn Forest Elementary School and Hidden Valley High School.  She was the mandolin player in the Hunter Family Band, who toured nationwide.  She was a deacon in the church and a “Pogey-Bait Angel” for Army 2nd Platoon OCS at Fort Belvoir, VA delivering Arby’s Roast Beef Sandwiches in the middle of the night to starving candidates.  She was awarded Most Athletic Girl at Lee Junior High School in Roanoke, VA.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, May 31 at Oakey’s South Chapel, 4247 Brambleton Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24018.  Her Celebration of Life Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at St .John Lutheran Church, 4608 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke, VA 24018, Pastor Myles Hixson officiating.  Those attending are asked to wear bright colors in honor of Sue.  Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave., Roanoke, VA 24017.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Crumley House Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center, 300 Urbana Road, Limestone, TN 37681, in honor of Sue’s continuing love and care for her son, Tom Hunter.
