J. Dexter (Dec) Hobbie IV, of Roanoke, Va., passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at the VA Hospital in Durham, N.C., after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his parents, J. Dexter Hobbie III and Elizabeth B. Hobbie.Dec is survived by his son, J.D. (Jason) Hobbie V and wife, Claire, of Glen Allen, Va.; and daughter, Laura Kemp and husband, Andy, of Hanover, Pa. He is also survived by his brother, Edwin (Bo) Hobbie and wife, Patti, of Harrisonburg, Va.; sisters, Margaret Hobbie of Roanoke, and Bev Lumsden and husband, Larry, of Roanoke, Va.; and his beloved grandchildren include Patrick Caviness, Ellis and Lawson Hobbie.Dec graduated from Patrick Henry High School and served in the Navy in the Mediterranean during the Viet Nam era. After the Navy he worked alongside his father at Hobbie Bros., Inc. for many years. Dec was also a Realtor with MKB Realtors for several years.Dec was a tremendous lover of nature and enjoyed hiking the many trails of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was also an avid Ham Radio operator and a talented photographer. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 29, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. Burial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Friends of The Blue Ridge Parkway, P.O.
